Learned borrowing from Sanskrit फणिश्वर (phaṇiśvara, literally “lord of snakes”), from फणि (phaṇi, “snake”) + ईश्वर (īśvara, “lord; chief; ruler”), equivalent to Thai ผณิ (pà-ní) + อีศวร.
