Etymology

From Sanskrit महासमुद्र (mahāsamudra, “ocean”, literally “great sea”). Equivalent to มหา (má-hǎa) +‎ สมุทร (sà-mùt). Cognate with Lao ມະຫາສະມຸດ (ma hā sa mut).
