Etymology[edit]

From Pali sapatha (oath; swearing); possibly via Old Khmer spota, spot, spotta, spipāṭa, ssapāṭa, *śapatha (to swear; to vow; to pledge; to take an oath) or Angkorian Old Khmer śapatha, śapata, śapatta (idem). Cognate with Modern Khmer ស្បថ (sbɑt).
