Etymology[edit]

From Sanskrit सुवर्ण (suvarṇa, gold, literally fine colour), from सु (su, good, fine; easy; etc) + वर्ण (varṇa, colour), equivalent to Thai สุ () +‎ วรรณ (wan). Cognate with Khmer សុវណ្ណ (sovan), Burmese သုဝဏ္ဏ (su.wanna.). Compare Pali suvaṇṇa, from which Thai สุวัณณ์ is derived.
