Etymology[edit]

Probably from Southern Thailand Teochew 馬打马打 (ma tă) and Southern Thailand / Penang Hokkien 馬打马打 (má-tâ, “police”), from Malay mata-mata. Additionally, หมา (mǎa, dog) has negative connotations when used in Thai.
