From Proto-Tai *miəᴬ (wife). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨾ᩠ᨿᩮ, Khün ᨾᩮ, Isan เมีย, Lao ເມຍ (mīa), ᦵᦙ (me), Tai Dam ꪣꪸ, Tai Dón ꪝꪸ, Shan မေး (mée), Ahom 𑜉𑜣 (), Zuojiang Zhuang meh, Zhuang meh/maex.
