From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰŋɯəkᴰ (gum; gill), from Proto-Tai *ʰŋɯəkᴰ (gum; gill), from Old Chinese (OC *ŋaːɡ, “jaw”).[1]

Cognate with Lao ເຫງືອກ (ngư̄ak), ᦵᦄᦲᧅ (ṅgoek), Shan ႁိူၵ်ႇ (hòek), Ahom 𑜀𑜢𑜤𑜀𑜫 (kük) Khün ᩉᩮᩥ᩠ᨦᨠ, Northern Thai ᩉᩮᩥᩬ᩠ᨦᨠ.
