From Proto-Southwestern Tai *sɛːnᴬ¹ (one hundred thousand) (Jonsson, 1991). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈᩯ᩠ᨶ, Lao ແສນ (sǣn), ᦶᦉᧃ (ṡaen), Shan သႅၼ် (sěn), Tai Nüa ᥔᥦᥢᥴ (sáen), Phake ꩬိၺ် (siñ), Ahom 𑜏𑜢𑜐𑜫 (siñ). Compare to Middle Chinese 千 *sen (thousand).
