From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kl(j)u(ŋ/k) (river, valley), borrowed from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ruŋ ~ *ruuŋ ~ *ruəŋ (river, channel). Cognate with Burmese ချောင်း (hkyaung:).
