From Proto-Mon-Khmer *(c)ŋajʔ (far). Cognate with Chong [tʰŋɯ̤əˀj], Khmer ឆ្ងាយ (chngaay), Khasi jngái, Koho ngae and Vietnamese ngái. Munda cognates include Santali ᱥᱟᱺᱜᱤᱧ (sẵgiñ, far).
