From Proto-Mon-Khmer *(c)ŋajʔ (“far”). Cognate with Chong [tʰŋɯ̤əˀj], Khmer ឆ្ងាយ (chngaay), Khasi jngái, Koho ngae and Vietnamese ngái. Munda cognates include Santali ᱥᱟᱺᱜᱤᱧ (sẵgiñ, “far”).
