From Proto-Tai *k.tɤtᴰ (fart). Cognate with Lao ຕົດ (tot), Shan တူတ်း (túut), Thai ตด (dtòt), Tai Dam ꪶꪔꪒ, Ahom 𑜄𑜢𑜤𑜄𑜫 (tüt), Zhuang roet. Probably of imitative origin. Compare Proto-Austronesian *qətut (whence Tagalog utot, and Maranao tot).
