Etymology[edit]

အင်္ကျီ (angkyi, clothes) +‎ ရှည် (hrany, long), from the Burmese association of Hokkien settlers with the merchant trade. Conversely, the Cantonese were associated with artisanship and manual work, hence the name အင်္ကျီတို (angkyitui).
