Borrowed from English astronaut, itself coined from Ancient Greek ἄστρον (ástron, star) + ναύτης (naútēs, sailor).

Usage notes[edit]

This English derived word only started appearing in the Georgian language after the collapse of the Soviet Union, due to the growing cultural influences from the United States, as well as the popularity of the US Space exploration programs and NASA in general.
