Manchu[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from some variety of Old Korean; compare Middle Korean 가지 (kaci, kind), whence Korean 가지 (gaji).

This root is also found in other Tungusic languages, e.g. Solon, Oroch, Udehe, Ulcha, Orok, Nanai, but inner-Tungusic correspondences indicate that in all these languages it is a loan from Manchu. It is not attested in Ewen, Arman and Evenki, which had no or rather limited contact with Jurchen and/or Manchu.
