Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *petᴰˢ² (“duck”), from Proto-Tai *pitᴰ (“duck”). Cognate with Thai เป็ด (bpèt), Northern Thai ᨸᩮᩢ᩠ᨯ, Khün ᨸᩮ᩠ᨯ, Lao ເປັດ (pet), Isan เป็ด, Lü ᦵᦔᧆ (ṗed), Tai Dam ꪹꪜꪸꪒ, Shan ပဵတ်း (páet), Ahom 𑜆𑜢𑜄𑜫 (pit), Zhuang bit, Nong Zhuang baet, byet, Zuojiang Zhuang bet, Bouyei bidt, Saek ปิ๊ด.
