If the form without the initial vowel is secondary, the root may have been Proto-Indo-European *h₂merd-, which is cognate with Sanskrit मृद्नाति (mṛdnāti, to pound, triturate), Latin mordeō (I bite) and Proto-Germanic *smertaną (to hurt).
