Ancient Greek[edit]
Alternative forms[edit]
- ἔντε’ (énte’) — apocopic
- ἔντη (éntē) — contracted
Etymology[edit]
Unknown. Beside this word, there is ἐντῡ́νω (entū́nō, “to equip, get ready”): as it recalls ἀρτῡ́νω (artū́nō), it may have been built after this verb. A basic noun *ἐντύς (*entús) could be assumed. Connection with ἄνῡμι (ánūmi, “to finish, conclude”) is impossible.
