Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Okinawan ちゃんぷるー, in turn from Indonesian campur (to mix multiple things together). First appears in Japanese texts from the mid-1960s.[1]

Superficially similar, but probably not directly related, to adjective ちゃんぽん (chanpon, mixed together).
