Etymology[edit]
Listed variously as borrowed from English papaya,[1] or from Latin from the species name Carica papaya.[2] An English derivation seems more likely historically, as the fruit is native to southern Mexico and Central America and was first imported into Japan in the mid-Meiji period, well after trading relations had been established with the United States.
