Etymology[edit]

Originally a compound of 五十 (i-, fifty, combining form) +‎ (ga, Old Japanese genitive particle) +‎ (arashi, storm), with the initial a of arashi dropped due to lack of vowel clusters in Old Japanese, hence the literal meaning "fifty storms".
