Etymology 1[edit]

Compound of (karada, body) +‎ (-jū, throughout). The chū changes to as an instance of rendaku (連濁). The character is often read as chū in compounds, with a meaning of “middle; inside, within”, but when read as with rendaku, the meaning shifts to “throughout, all over”.
