Etymology[edit]

Unclear. The mochi reading for is irregular. The kanji spelling may be ateji for 家持ち (iemochi, homeowner). Alternatively, the reading of the second character may be a shift from 茂し (moshi, lush, luxuriant, flourishing, obsolete adjective).
