Etymology[edit]
Referring to the historical 廣州府/广州府 (Guǎngzhōu fǔ, “Guangzhou prefecture”) in the Ming and Qing dynasties, which administered fourteen counties of Guangdong province in the Qing dynasty, and whose capital was located in Guangzhou.

This term is used to refer to the dialects of Cantonese that are more or less similar to the Guangzhou dialect, in order to distinguish them from those that are more divergent (eg. the dialects spoken in Taishan or Yangjiang).
