Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Ryukyuan *kanasi, from Proto-Japonic *kanasi (beloved, dear). Cognate with Old Japanese 悲し (kanasi, emotionally overwhelming: dear, beloved, sad) (whence standard Japanese 悲しい (kanashii, sad, sorrowful)).
