Etymology[edit]
May be from Middle Chinese compound 本書/本书 (pwonX syo, literally “trunk; main + writing”). Compare modern Mandarin reading běnshū, Cantonese bun2 syu1, Hakka pún-sû.
Alternatively, may have been composed in Japan of Middle Chinese-derived components, as a compound of 本 (hon, “main; this”) + 書 (sho, “writing; document; book”).
