Etymology[edit]

Term first attested around the Tenshō era (1573-1592).

The 連用形 (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of verb 傾く (kabuku, to tilt, to lean).[1][2]

The kanji spelling is an example of phonetic ateji (当て字), literally "song, dance, and skill".
