Etymology[edit]

Calque of English nautical mile, formed as a compound of (kai, sea, ocean) +‎ (ri, league, unit of distance). First appears in 1872.[1]

Also encountered in some historical texts[2] with the kanji spelling 海哩, using the alternative (ri, mile) character.
