Etymology[edit]

Compound of (えん)(えき) (en'eki, to deduce) + (ほう) (-hō, method).

Coined by Japanese philosopher Inoue Tetsujirō in 1881 in his work 哲学字彙 (Tetsugaku Jii, Dictionary of Philosophy) as a translation of English deduction, based on the phrase 更互演繹,作為此書 in the Doctrine of the Mean (中庸).[1]
