Etymology[edit]

Compound of 焦げる (kogeru, to become burnt, scorched, singed, charred) +‎ 付く (tsuku, to stick to something).[1]

Usage notes[edit]

With regard to monetary matters, 焦げ付く is said of the lender. Compare the English expression to get burned (in a transaction). Meanwhile, 踏み倒す is said of the borrower.
