Etymology[edit]
Literary Chinese 理事 (lǐshì, “to arrange matters”). The sense evolved into "director", as in "a person who arranges matters". Compare 執事 (shitsuji, “butler”, literally “to execute matters”), 判事 (hanji, “judge”, literally “to judge matters”).
