irregular goon kun’yomi

Etymology[edit]

Likely a shortening of the more common 重籐の弓 (shigedō no yumi, a black-lacquered archery bow wrapped in strips of rattan), omitting the possessive particle (no).

Alternatively, a compound of 重籐 (shigedō, a black-lacquered archery bow wrapped in strips of rattan) +‎ (yumi, bow).

The yumi is technically redundant, but is used to clarify the meaning, as shigedō is not a very common word in Japanese.
