Inherited from Sanskrit ददाति (dadāti), from the root दा (dā, “to give”). Compare Bengali দেওয়া (deōẇa) and Assamese দে (de), as well as Nepali दिनु (dinu), Hindi देना (denā), Urdu دینا (denā), Gujarati દેવું (devũ), Punjabi ਦੇਣਾ (deṇā).
