Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Karen *thejᴬ (water) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *thi⁴ (idem) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-t(w)əj-n ~ m-ti-s (water, fluid, wet, to soak). Cognate with Pa'o Karen ထီ, Eastern Pwo ထီ့, Western Pwo ထံၫ, S'gaw Karen ထံ (hṭee).
