Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄀᆞᆯ외〮다〮 (Yale: kòlGwóy-tá). Seems to be a causative verb, but the two words of the form ᄀᆞᆯ다〮 (Yale: kòl-tá, “to exchange, to switch; to say, to speak”) are obviously unlikely to be related on semantic grounds.
