Etymology[edit]

First appeared in the 20th century, as a compound of gasi (“wife”) and *beosi (“husband”).

The first component is related to Middle Korean (kas, woman, wife), whence also the fossilised modern prefix 가시– (gasi–, “uxorial”), seen in 가시어미 (gasieomi, “wife's mother”), 가시아비 (gasiabi, “wife's father”), 가시할미 (gasihalmi, “wife's grandmother”), etc.

The second element possibly derives itself from Middle Korean 바ᇧ (pask, outside) (modern (bak)), which metonymically referred to “husband” who traditionally goes out to work during the day (cf. 바깥사람 (bakkatsaram)). A —이 (-i) agent suffix is present and is possibly an early modern addition, likely for rhyming purposes.
