Etymology

The second element is the realis adnominal form of 크다 (khú-tá, “to be large”) and the third element is Sino-Korean 동(洞) (twong, “district”), but the first syllable is unclear.

In Hanja, the place is written 加斤洞. It has been proposed that the first syllable stemmed from a mistaken Sino-Korean reading of the character 加 (ka, “to add; more”) which had originally been intended as a logogram for Korean 더 (te, “more”), and thus that the original, purely native name was 더큰〮골〯 (Tè Khún Kwǒl, literally "the Bigger Town"). This is speculative, however.
