Etymology[edit]

Probably from (kalh, knife) + Sino-Korean () (twu, head, tip), in reference to the shape of the peak. There are still about a dozen attested locales called 갈두 (Galdu) in modern Korea, most of which are also called 갈머리 (Galmeori) using the native alternative 머리 (meori) for "head".
