Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Yeogeo yuhae (譯語類解 / 역어유해), 1690, as Early Modern Korean 고도리 (Yale: kwotwoli), if only the Hangul script is taken into account. However, the word is actually attested since the thirteenth century in the Sinicized form 古道魚古道鱼.

In the late eighteenth century, this native word was misconstrued as being Sino-Korean (possibly influenced by the 古道魚 spelling) and the Sino-Korean suffix ㅇ어 (, -ngeo, “fish”) was attached, producing the modern form.
