Sino-Korean word from 大洞, from 大 (“big”) + 洞 (“dong”).

- Phonetic hangul: [대(ː)동/데(ː)동]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
