Etymology[edit]

Sino-Korean word from 大黃魚. Literally "big yellow fish." From (, dae, “big”) + (, hwang, “yellow”) + (, eo, “fish”).

  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)/(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
