Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 도ᄅᆞᅘᅧ〮다〮 (Yale: twòlòhhyétá), from 도ᄅᆞ (twòlò–, to turn, to change) + ᅘᅧ〮다〮 (hhyétá, to pull; emphatic auxiliary). Doublet of 도리어 (dorieo, instead, rather).
