First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄇᆡ〮브르다〮 (Yale: póy-pùlù-tá). (bae, belly) +‎ 부르다 (bureuda, to be full).
