Etymology[edit]
The origin is uncertain. Possibilities include:
- Might be cognate with Korean 벌 (beol, “field”), compare Korean 서라벌 (seorabeol) and Korean 고사부리 (gosaburi).
- Might be borrowed from Tungusic and Old Mongolian, compare Manchu ᠪᡠᡥᡡ (buhū, “deer”) and Mongolian ᠪᠣᠭᠣ (boɣo, “deer”).
