First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 소ᇇ〮벽〮 (Yale: swón-s-pyék).

From (son, hand) +‎ (-s-, genitive interfix) +‎ 벽(壁) (byeok, wall).
