From 수리 (suri, eagle) +‎ (-s-, genitive marker) +‎ (nal, day). Also attested in the Gugeupganibang eonhae (救急簡易方諺解 / 구급간이방언해), 1489, as Middle Korean 수릿〮날 (Yale: swulí-s-nal).

Another theory is 수레 (sure, wheel) +‎ (-s-, genitive marker) +‎ (nal, day).
