Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Gukhan hoehwa (國韓會話 / 국한회화), 1895, as Early Modern Korean 썰물.

Probably from an unattested Middle Korean word *ᅘᅧᆯ〮믈〮 (*hhyélmúl, low tide, literally pulling water) which pairs with Middle Korean 밀〯믈〮 (mǐlmúl, high tide, literally pushing water), from ᅘᅧ〮 (hhyé-, to pull) + (-l, adnominal suffix) + 믈〮 (múl, water).

See also 써다 (sseoda, to drain).
