Etymology[edit]
Partial calque of Early Mandarin 玉蜀黍 (yùshǔshǔ), from 옥(玉) (ok, “jade”) + 수수 (susu, “sorghum”, from Mandarin 蜀黍 (shǔshǔ)).
First attested in the Yeogeo yuhae (譯語類解 / 역어유해), 1690, as Early Modern Korean 옥슈슈 (Yale: oksyusyu).
