Etymology 1[edit]

Short from 주비기장. First attested in Geumyangjamnok (금양잡록/衿陽雜綠) as 주비기자ᇰ, probably referencing to the multitude of grains.

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 주비. Probably a relative to Common Turkic *čabïĺ or Japanese つわもの thus firstly having a sense of "host", "army", later shifting its meaning into "crowd".
