Gothic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From ๐Œฐ๐†- (af-, โ€œoff-โ€) +‎ *๐ƒ๐„๐Œฐ๐ƒ๐ƒ (*stass, โ€œ[act of] standingโ€) or from ๐Œฐ๐†๐ƒ๐„๐Œฐ๐Œฝ๐Œณ๐Œฐ๐Œฝ (afstandan) +‎ -๐Œธ๐ƒ (-รพs); thus literally, "[act of] standing apart", in its attested uses in the Gothic Bible specifically a separation from an earlier state of affairs. Renders Koine Greek แผ€ฯ€ฮฟฯƒฯ„ฮฑฯƒฮฏฮฑ (apostasรญa) and แผ€ฯ€ฮฟฯƒฯ„ฮฌฯƒฮนฮฟฮฝ (apostรกsion), of which it may be at least a partial calque or semantic loan.
