Old Persian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)

Adjective[edit]

𐎠𐎶𐎠𐎫𐎠 (a-m-a-t-a /āmātā/)

  1. uncertain: distinguished, noble?[1]

Usage notes[edit]

The meaning is under debate. Many scholars (such as Skjærvø) argue for an adjective describing nobility on the basis of the Akkadian translation of the Behistun Inscription.
